Tuition Freedom Day

Did you know that tuition currently covers only 76% of the education costs for a PLNU student?  In fact, never in the history of our university has tuition covered the entire cost of a student’s education.  So how is the remaining portion covered?  Through generous financial support PLNU receives as alumni contributions, donor gifts, corporate sponsorships, and foundation support.  That’s right!  It happens through gifts, both large and small, from people just like you.

Whether or not we realized it, each one of us who attended this university was helped by others who gave to subsidize the cost of our education. To celebrate this and raise awareness among students and alums, the Alumni Association, ASB, and Student Congress host Tuition Freedom Day. This has become an annual event to highlight the difference made in student's lives, through generous alumni support, and the impact we can make in the lives of countless future students through our faithful giving.

To celebrate and thank PLNU alumni & donors, the Alumni Association partnered with Student Congress, the ASB Board of Directors, Sodexo and Bartell Hotels to host the 5th annual “Tuition Freedom Day” on March 20, 2013.   After Chapel, students enjoyed free coffee and pastries in the ARC while writing thank you notes to alumni, other donors, churches, corporations and foundations who have contributed to their education. In just 30 minutes, we received 518 thank you notes! This is up from 380+ written in 2012. In exchange for one thank you note, each student received the latest TFD t-shirt, designed by Lauryn Reynolds, ASB Director of Communications.

How can you help?  In addition to prayer and volunteer support, a crucial area of university support is the Alumni Giving Rate.  This rate is the percentage of alumni who have given a gift of any size to the university between July 1 and June 30.  When seeking financial support from foundations and corporate donors, the university is asked to provide its alumni giving rate.  US News and World Report also uses this figure when ranking institutions across the country. In both instances, the Alumni Giving Rate is seen as a measure of alumni satisfaction.  So a gift of any size makes a difference because it raises our Alumni Giving Rate.  If you haven’t given this year, please consider giving a gift by June 30 to help raise our Alumni Giving Rate!
