On-Campus Job FAQs
PLNU has many different academic and administrative departments in which students are employed in a variety of positions: clerks, office assistants, groundskeepers, dining service associates, accompanists, referees, statisticians, library assistants, sales associates, media equipment operators, lighting assistants, chapel checkers, switchboard operators, housekeepers, movers, shipping/receiving clerks and many more.
PLNU on-campus jobs are listed on the Student Services page accessible through the Student Portal. You will be required to enter your Student Access log-in information to view all jobs that are posted.
Students will now be able to apply online for any on-campus job that is currently posted. Some supervisors will require resumes, while others will not. Please be advised that you may not complete an application without attaching a resume if it is required. We suggest that you have an electronic version of your resume available when you apply.
As many as you like. Just remember that you will need to follow up with each job that you apply for. There are typically more jobs available towards the beginning of a semester. If you are hired and have applied for more jobs please let the other supervisors know if you are no longer interested in their position.
Yes and no. Once you have been offered and accept a position, you are required to see the Student Employment Coordinator to fill out all appropriate paperwork before you start working or training. One of the forms you will complete is called the " I-9," which is legally required by the Department of Homeland Security. For the I-9 form you will need to present forms of identification in order to verify your eligibility to work in the U.S. The most common documents used are a Social Security Card and Driver's License, or a Passport. These must be original documents--NO PHOTOCOPIES OR FAXES. However, documents other than your Social Security Card CAN be used--Click here for a list of other usable documents.
Student wages are generally minimum wage, which is currently $8.00/hour as of January 2008. Automatic raises are given according to the quantity of hours worked. Work Study wages and raises are the same as non-Work Study wages.
Pay raises happen automatically after you have worked in the same job for 450 hours. If you switch jobs, your hours drop back down to zero.
Due to PLNU's commitment to academics, it is recommended that students work no more than 20 hours a week, so that sufficient time to study is allowed.
Pay periods at PLNU are two weeks long. Time cards are due every other Sunday (but you may turn them in as late as the following Monday at noon), and pay checks are issued the following Friday. If you complete your time cards regularly and on time, you will be able to pick up your paycheck in the Business Office every other Friday after Chapel. Student employees are also offered the convenience of direct deposit. If a student elects this form of payment, he/she must complete a short form in the Office of Student Employment.

When did you start your current job? If it was within the last week, chances are that the Business Office hasn't had a chance to enter your time card into the computer. If it has been more than a week, contact the Student Employment Office.
First, the term "Work Study" should not be confused to mean that you are paid to study, or that you may study while on a job. Nor is Federal Work Study (FWS) like a grant or loan where you receive the money in lump sums. It essentially is like a regular job where you work, then get paid for the hours that you worked in that pay period. Pay periods at PLNU are 2 weeks.
You should use the amount of FWS funds that you are awarded as a guideline for how much you should work to cover that amount of your school bill. PLNU and the Federal government use that dollar figure to designate how much of your earnings will be subsidized by the government. You do not have to earn all of an award amount and you may earn more than that amount at PLNU. The money earned through the FWS program will be paid in full by check to the student employee. All, part, or none of the money may be applied to your school bill - the decision is yours.
Work Study applies mainly to on-campus jobs, but there are also off-campus Work Study opportunities available through the America Reads Tutor Program. FWS recipients will be placed in local schools to work with elementary students on their reading skills, or in the College Peer Advisors program. College Peer Advisors help high school students through the college application/admission/decision process. Please contact the Student Employment Office if you are interested in one of these positions.

There are some great advantages to working in Dining Services: the pay is $.20/hour higher than most jobs on campus and you will already know you have a job on campus before you arrive. The hours are flexible, your meals are free while you are on duty and you can move into your residence hall before the crunch starts. In addition, there are opportunities for you to advance in food services throughout your university career. Positions are available in both the Dining Room and special event Catering.

A Dining Services staff member will contact you to do a phone interview and give further instructions. A mandatory orientation and training session will be scheduled in August before New Student Orientation.
Occasionally on-campus departments need to hire student employees to help them temporarily. These jobs include assisting with large mailings and directing traffic for large on-campus events. If you are interested in being a part of the Work Corps, come by the Student Employment office and sign up! Click here to view the list of necessary acceptable documents to complete your I-9.
Unfortunately, the answer is no. While there are over 800 jobs on campus, we do not have enough jobs for everyone. It is strongly recommended that you start your job search right away if you want to work on campus. It is also recommended that you conduct your job search with the mindset that you'll take what's available and not wait for the "coolest" jobs on campus.
Generally, students who wait to apply for jobs or who are very picky about what job they will take have a hard time finding a job, or won't find one at all. There are no "awful" jobs on campus. Apply for all the jobs that fit your class schedule. You are not locked into any job and you may change jobs if/when you find one that's more suited to you or that is more along the lines of your career goals.
Yes, the Student Employment Office offers a "Free Room Contract." In order to receive the free room benefit, you must work 30-40 hours per week throughout the entire summer and fulfill the other requirements listed on the contract.
Yes, you may work off campus. However, if you are a freshman please be aware of the Freshman Vehicle Policy.
Off-campus jobs are posted on the Off-Campus Job Board. Some jobs are within walking distance from PLNU, some are on the bus line that goes by PLNU, and some require a car.
While the pay rates for off-campus jobs are generally higher than on-campus jobs, you need to consider several factors - gas money, car loan payments, car insurance, taxes, travel time, and flexibility. On-campus jobs do not have social security, employment or state disability taxes deducted from your pay.
There are many and varied off campus jobs. Many of the people in the local community need students to care for their children, do house work and yard work or do personal care for their aging or handicapped parents. There are also many small businesses in the Point Loma and greater San Diego area who need students to work part time. All of these jobs are posted on the online job board.
Yes, there are several email mailing lists that students may sign up on for jobs such as childcare, house work, yard work, personal care and miscellaneous jobs. The Student Employment Office maintains these email mailing lists. Whenever someone from the community calls with a specific need (for example, "I need a babysitter for Friday night from 7pm-9pm!"), the Student Employment Office will email that person's request and contact info to the students on the email list. It is then up to the students to respond to the employer directly.
You may sign up for one of all of the lists. You are advised to check out the employers before you accept the job, and they are likewise advised to conduct interviews with you and check your references. Also keep in mind that these mailing lists are primarily for temporary or occasional work, so if you're looking for steady work please check the online job board.
To sign up to be put on one of these lists, stop by the Student Employment office to fill out the "Temp and Occasional Work" form. You will need to know your local phone number before you can sign up.
The Student Employment Office is unable to research the integrity of each employer who posts jobs or requests one of the work lists. Therefore, you are urged to undertake this responsibility yourself. Use caution and common sense when applying for any position with any employer. Also, don't go alone to a residential address to apply for a job.
Yes! International students are eligible to work on campus, but additional specialized paperwork must be completed before you start working or training. Please bring your passport, I-20, and I-94 with you. For more info, check Student Employment's International Students Information page.
