Alum Gets Call From Disney

Jason Carter graduated from PLNU in 2004 with a degree in media communication with an emphasis on production. “While I was at Point Loma, I was able to direct a short film, that got a little attention in the festival circuit,” said Carter. With this, Carter met some people that worked for DreamWorks Animation, who later hired him to work with them.
For six-and-a-half years Carter worked at DreamWorks Animations as the Production Assistant in the Story Department.
“I was promoted to become the Production Coordinator for Animation on a movie called Flushed Away,” said Carter
After that, Carter changed careers and became the Layout Artist for Kung Fu Panda. Carter stayed with that job long enough to also have a part on films Monsters vs. Aliens and Bee Movie.
“Monsters vs. Aliens was DW’s first Stereoscopic 3D picture and I was one of a few people to embrace it from its infancy,” said Carter.
The studio recognized Carter's talent and he was then given the opportunity to work on Stereoscopic 3D for Shrek Forever After and Puss In Boots.
“About this time, Disney gave me a call and asked if I’d be interested in coming over to one of their animation studios to oversee all aspects of Stereoscopic 3D for an upcoming franchise they are developing,” said Carter.
With this, Carter is the Stereographer of Disney Toon Studios.
“In the most simple terms, I’m responsible for creatively overseeing and executing all aspects of Stereoscopic 3D for an entire franchise,” said Carter.
With a great job comes high responsibility and with that comes stress. However, Carter said, “Disney (being the animation powerhouse that it is) is a well-oiled machine that has fine-tuned its production processes to near masterful levels, making the amount of stress in my job as minimal as possible.”
In addition, this type of job also carries many benefits, and Carter said the biggest benefit to his job is working with the best, brightest, most passionate people in the film business.
“Every day is an adventure for me, learning from the collective vast wealth of knowledge that Disney’s employees have gathered over the years,” said Carter.
