Welcome to February’s Newsletter! This is a very exciting time to be a student, and a parent, at PLNU. There are so many events this semester that are sure to offer something for every interest.

Far Away. Explore what it means to be a human being in a fallen world at Salomon Theatre's production of Caryl Churchill's Far Away. The box office will be open Monday through Friday, 12:30-4 p.m., and the show dates are Tuesday, January 29th- Saturday, February 2nd. Tickets are $8 for Rush, and $10 for Students, Adults, and Seniors. Visit Salomon Theatre’s website, or contact salomontheatre@pointloma.edu for further information.

“Little Shop of Horrors” Auditions! Auditions for "Little Shop of Horrors," a sci-fi musical about our greatest fears (dentists, aliens, and romantic rejection), will be taking place on Monday, February 4th, in Salomon Theatre. Your student may sign up for an audition time on the Cabrillo office door (206). They will need to bring sixteen bars of a musical theatre song and an accompanist or track, as well as a prepared two-minute monologue (comic or light tone preferred), or else scenes will be available for cold reading. Radio Show by the Sea. Come out and see PLNU’s very own talent perform your favorite radio-famous, make-up and break-up, love songs. Radio Show will take place in Crill Performance Hall, at 7:30 p.m., on February 8th. Tickets may be purchased at the door and cost $5 for one person, or $8 for two.

MSN Information Event. Senior BSN students are invited to join us at the MSN Information Event on Saturday, February 2nd, at the Liberty Station Conference Center. They’ll hear about the program, enjoy some breakfast from Panera Bread, and meet their MSN Enrollment Counselor. Lessons from Abroad. Lessons from Abroad is a unique conference for study abroad returnees throughout the San Diego area.  Students will learn how to market their global worldview, and discover how they can incorporate their experience abroad into their work after graduation. The conference is taking place on Saturday, February 9th, at SDSU, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If students miss their host country and want expand their global experience, this conference is the perfect opportunity! Alumni Endowed Student Scholarships. Need help paying for tuition next year?  Apply now to receive a $2,000 Scholarship for the 2013-2014 school year!

Commuter Whatever. Commuters are invited to join us at the Commuter Lounge on Wednesday, January 30th, for free bagels, doughnuts, OJ, coffee, and more!

Welcome PLNU’s New Chaplain! We are pleased to announce that Rev. Tim Whetstone has accepted our offer to come to PLNU as our new chaplain. He has a great love for young adults, breadth of experience in ministry and is excited about joining our community. Tim will begin serving as chaplain the last week of February. His family will join him in June.

Tim is an ordained minister and previously served as Pastor of a church plant in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Tim has served in various ministry positions as well as a missionary in Italy and Singapore. He is a graduate of Northwest Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary and holds degrees in Philosophy, Christian Education and Intercultural Studies. He has received extensive training in Family Life education, leadership development and emergency disaster response. He most recently served as Pastor of New Start Church of the Nazarene in the South Hills of  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has a deep desire to help equip and empower others to be kingdom leaders.

Strengths on Point Sessions. Do you know how to care for the important people in your life by loving them the way they need to be loved? Are you interested in sharing how others can relate to you in ways that are most meaningful? Groups might be perfect for your student’s roommates, significant other, friends, or teammates! One of our trained Strengths on Point volunteers will guide your student’s group through an exploration of each set of strengths, and how they can utilize them to best work together. Library Game Night. It’s that time again: time to gather at Ryan Library for Game Night!  Students are invited on Friday, February 1st, from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Bring your own table games, or select one from our collection.  Free snacks will be provided. Visit the Ryan Library page for this event for further details.  

Super Bowl Sunday!  Students are invited to join us on Sunday, February 3rd, for Super Bowl Sunday in the ARC. Enjoy pizza, chips, and drinks while watching the game on the big screen.

Student Dietetic Association. How will a person's "mental fitness," energy level, or ability to concentrate be affected if they consume fewer nutrients than their body needs?  How bad would it have to get before you would notice the subtle effects on you or your client's nervous system?  If an individual consumed toxic amounts of some nutrient or dietary non-nutrient, how might that influence their mental status? The SDA at PLNU is hosting noted nutrition researcher and author, Ruth Leyse-Wallace, PhD, RD, to answer these questions and more on Tuesday, February 5th, at 7 p.m., in Colt Hall. This thought-provoking session will be free, and is open to the entire campus community.

Summer Camp Job Fair. Do you know a student who is interested in working at a camp over the summer? The Offices of Strength and Vocation is hosting a Summer Camp Job Fair on Wednesday, February 6th, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will be on the Campus Mall, or, in case of rain, it will be moved to the ARC. This is a great opportunity for your student to meet with recruiters from various summer camps and learn about their open positions. Thursday Throwback. Grab your fanny packs and overall shorts, and head to the ARC on Thursday, February 7th, from 8-10:30 p.m., for the 90’s themed Thursday Throwback! Enjoy playing arcade games, eat some munchies, and have a totally radical time dancing the night away.

Fair Trade Forum. Come to a Colt Hall on Wednesday, February 13th, from 7-8 p.m. to discuss the idea of creating a fair trade fund here at PLNU. There will be a time for questions and answers with Jamie Gates and Andrew Schalin.

Renewal Week Opportunities. During Renewal Week, there are a few extra opportunities for guided prayer. Prescott Prayer Chapel will be open for guided prayer, based on Matthew 25, all week long. Before and after chapel, a massive prayer wall installation is open in the Brown Chapel Lobby.

Spring Service Day Donations. Renewal Week culminates with our annual Spring Service Day on Saturday, February 2nd, and we need your help! We are collecting donations of school supplies (pencils, crayons, and paper only) for Ministry with Mexico projects, as well as adult size socks and travel-size toiletries for Homeless Ministries. Items can be dropped off in the foyer of Brown Chapel, or in the Spiritual Development office through Friday. Cash donations are welcome as well. Christianity in Hollywood. In an evening with the writer and producer of "That 70's Show," Dean Batali, himself, will be giving a talk about what it is like to be a Christian in Hollywood. Join him on Monday, January 28th, from 7-9 p.m. in Crill Hall.

Cause There ain’t no Cure for the Summer Time Blues!  

Or is there?  We know it is only February, but it is never too early for your student to prepare for summer.  Now, it is true summer break should be a time to relax after a long semester.  Maybe take a family vacation or spend countless hours doing nothing on the beach, or catching up on needed sleep.  Summer can also be a time to get ahead.  Full-time work over the summer may not be for everyone, however, you can suggest they take some down time and put it to use for their future, and it is never too early to plan for that.  Here are a couple of things your student can do prior to May.

Create or build a resume.  During the next few months there are plenty of opportunities for students to either build a new resume or retool the one they already have.  There are a number of resume workshops, as well as individual resume coaching sessions offered through OSV.  There are also going to be many professionals on campus willing to offer resume advice to your student.  This is the heart of the job fair season so students need to be prepared with a well formatted content driven resume.

Develop your LinkedIn profile.  Every student, in every major, needs to have a complete and engaging LinkedIn profile.  OSV offers individual LinkedIn coaching sessions that your student can take advantage of.  LinkedIn is quickly becoming the “go to” for online networking.  We hear less and less of “Here is my card” and more “Let’s Link in.” This is a free service, and the most dominant online networking site, so your student needs to create a profile and then be an active participant on the site.  We can teach them how to do this, just have them come to the OSV and set an appointment. 

Apply for summer jobs and internships.  Over the next few months your student will have plenty of opportunities to meet with employers about possible summer jobs and internships.  February 7th, we are holding the Summer Camp Job Fair. This is an event were many summer camps come to hire counselors.  Your student has the opportunity to meet with a diverse group of camps and apply to the ones that make sense.  March 15-22, is Expo Days.  This is 6 days of employers coming on campus to hire for both full-time jobs and internships.  Each day we will be highlighting a different industry.  Along with this, your student will have a chance to go through mock interviews with professionals in their area of interest.  Both of these events give your student direct access to companies that are hiring.  Also throughout the rest of the semester OSV will be putting on several Network 9 events were students can connect with professionals about possible jobs and internships.
So make sure your students takes advantage of all of the programs and services offered over the next few months.  Once again summer should be fun and relaxing, but really how much relaxing can one college student do?  After a week they will be ready to get back to work. (snicker snicker)

SPRING 2013 STATEMENT OF ACCOUNT
If your student is registered for the spring semester, s/he should already have received a statement of account in the mail.  If you have not seen the spring statement, please contact your student or visit the parent portal to view the statement. All future bills for the spring semester will be made available on the student and parent portals.  Payment for Spring 2012 was due January 3, 2013.

If your student has provided you with financial information releases, you will receive a postcard each month that a bill is generated, notifying you that the bill is available to be viewed online through your parent portal.  If you’d prefer to receive this notification by email, please update your “Notification Preferences” through your parent portal (on the same page as the statement of account, under Financial Services).   Please be sure that we have a valid email address on file for you.
 

Late Fees and Financial Holds

On February 4th, a 5% late fee will be charged on all outstanding balances, after taking pending aid into consideration.  Please make sure your student’s account is paid in full to avoid a late fee!

Financial Holds will be placed on all delinquent accounts on March 15th.  This hold will prevent registration for any subsequent semesters, and will prevent participation in on-campus housing room draws.  Note that pending aid will not be taken into account, so please be sure to have your student follow up on any sources of pending aid to ensure that it posts prior to March 15th.

2013-14 SFS NAMED SCHOLARSHIP

The SFS Named Scholarship application allows current students to apply for multiple endowed scholarship funds with one easy application. The online application for the 2013-14 scholarship will be available to your student in early March.  Watch for announcements!

 1098-T TAX FORMS

PLNU has contracted with ECSI to provide 1098-Ts electronically for 2012, and these tax forms are now available through your student’s portal.  Form 1098-T is a tax summary issued by PLNU to all students registered during a specified tax year, and includes tuition and required fees, adjustments made for prior years, and scholarships or grants received by the student.  Room and Board, living expenses, and textbook costs are not included.

Information on Form 1098-T is reported to the IRS and can be used by students to claim certain tax credits or deductions.  More information is available on our 1098-T telephone line: (619) 849-2799.

To view and print the 1098-T, students will login to the student portal and click on the “Students” tab.
•    Click on “Financial Services”
•    Click on “1098-T” on the left hand side navigation bar.
•    Follow the instructions to access the 1098-T tax form through ECSI’s website.

If you run into any difficulties, please call ECSI at (866)428-1098.

Note that Box 2 of your 1098-T will reflect amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses during the 2012 calendar year.  Box 1 should be blank.  We recommend that you provide this form to your tax preparer, as neither PLNU nor ECSI is able to provide you with any tax advice.

Would you like to send your student some homemade desserts? For a $25 donation, the Women’s Auxiliary of PLNU will lovingly bake homemade cakes, cookies, or brownies and have them delivered right to your student’s residence hall!

You can order and pay online at www.pointloma.edu/cake.

Proceeds from this fundraiser are going toward Women’s Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts to fulfill the wish lists of each residence hall.  They will be working on projects like putting in bike racks, kitchen upgrades, purchasing printers, adding dehumidifiers, and so much more.  So, it is a double benefit for your student!
