PLNU One of Four San Diego Universities to "Rock Hunger"
Oct. 15-28, PLNU joins three other local universities – The University of California San Diego, San Diego State University, and California State University San Marcos – in Colleges Rock Hunger, a competitive food drive. The four San Diego universities will compete to raise the most donations – food or money – for the San Diego Food Bank. The drive is the result of a partnership between the San Diego Food Bank and the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, where the winning school’s name will be project for a week.
“It is my belief that PLNU is also meant to be a light to this community,” said Melissa Burt-Gracik, PLNU’s director of community life, who is heading the event along with 10 student volunteers. “That is why, as the only faith-based university participating in the Colleges Rock Hunger food drive, it is important to me that we have a strong showing of our support for the hungry of San Diego.”
Donations will be collected in bins at Fresh & Easy and Vons in Point Loma, as well as in bins located around PLNU’s campus. PLNU students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to purchase packages of food provided by Sodexo when they round up their purchase of a meal and donate the difference to the cause. Student volunteers will also pick up donations from faculty and staff offices.
On Wednesday, Oct. 17, students will participate in “Walk and Knock,” going door-to-door in the Point Loma community asking residents to bring donations to local grocery stores or to PLNU’s Fall Festival on Oct. 20. Fall Festival, which selects a nonprofit to support and highlight at each year’s event, has chosen Colleges Rock Hunger as this cause.
On Nov. 9, the Hard Rock Hotel will host a ceremony where the winning university will be announced. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and San Diego City Council President Tony Young will present a trophy to the victorious school.
