Freshman Anthony Whitson-Martini was recently honored as the second place winner in the Carmel Music Society Vocal Competition.

“To have a freshman place among the post-graduates at some of the nation’s finest schools of music is phenomenal,” said Dr. J. Craig Johnson, Whitson-Martini’s voice professor.

Meanwhile, Christen Horne, a senior music major, won first place and $3,000 in the Virginia Hawk Memorial Scholarship competition.

“PLNU had never had a student place in either competition before this, as it is very rare that students as young as Christen or Anthony would ever be considered ready to compete at this level,” said Johnson.

First place winners at the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions this year included Horne, Karin Wilcox (09), and Christian Sanders (11). Austin Thompson (11) won two encouragement awards from the San Diego District.

Five PLNU singers were selected for and will be attending prestigious summer programs this year: Whitson- Martini – OperaWorks Advanced Artist program; Michelle Law and Phillip Dannels – OperaWorks Emerging Artist program; and Horne and Genie Tjahjadi – Opera Academy of California.
