Whittier College Debate Scrimmage Results

Date:
Friday, October 1, 2010

The new season for the PLNU speech and debate team officially started this past weekend, at Whittier College.  In case Whittier college sounds familiar, Dr. James Jackson informs me that PLNU (back when we were located in Pasadena) met with success debating against a former Whittier Poet who went on to become U. S. President, Richard M. Nixon.

It is a bit early to say if we had any future presidents in our midst this Saturday, but there was some very good debate going on.  Congratulations to the following teams for outstanding performances at this scrimmage.

In Senior Division:

Certificates of Superiority for winning all four rounds were awarded to the teams of:

Kim Jensen and Alex Pineda, and

Mac Andrews and Michelle Diaz

A Certificate of  Excellence for winning three out of the four rounds was awarded to:

Barbara Gausewitz and Ciera Wilson

In Novice Division:

A Certificate of Superiority for winning all four rounds was awarded to the team of:

Benjamin Carney and Christine Wright

A Certificate of  Excellence for winning three out of the four rounds was awarded to:

Haley Courtney and Chris Huerta

This was the first tournament experience ever for about 16 of our students in the Argumentation and Debate class, many of whom will go on to join the speech and debate team. They all performed well and learned a great deal.

Special thanks to those serving as judges including PLNU alumni and peer judges Chris Gutierrez, Caitlyn Burford, Jayme Fancher, Ashley Nuckels, Ian Sharples, and James Wilson.
