Heide Doss, Ph.D.

Adjunct Professor in Physics and Engineering

Dr. Heide Doss received her BS in Physics with a minor in mathematics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1988. She completed her MS and Ph.D. in Theoretical Quantum Optics and Laser Physics from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1992. In 1995 she earned her MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Secondary Science Education. Dr. Doss currently holds a Single Subject CA Clear Teaching Credential for Pre-K through Adult.

Dr. Doss’ science research has focused on the interaction of radiation with matter to explore lasing and coherent interactions. She has dabbled in fiber optic immunosensors, and is interested in educational research.

Dr. Doss is very interested and active in science outreach and science education. She is currently an active member of the American Physical Society’s Forum on Outreach and Engaging the Public and contributes science outreach articles for the American Physical Society’s outreach website, Physics Central. She has been involved in the writing and editing of multiple physics textbooks and teacher’s guides for grades 6-12, and has created and edited curriculum on special topics in physics. Dr. Doss also contributes as a content editor, writing physics assessment items. Dr. Doss often helps out in K-12 classrooms or, when she can, substitute teaches in one of the local schools.

Dr. Doss’ primary hobbies are physics and education, and she is usually spending time on these while being mom. Dr. Doss is actively involved in her children’s schools, is a member of local science clubs, loves to hike, exercise, take moments to appreciate the beautiful world we live in, and enjoy good food.
