Robert W. Smith, DMin

Professor of Scripture and Preaching

Robert Smith grew up in New Lorthrop, Michigan — a small village near Flint. His life revolved around family, church, and school. Smith received a call to pastoral ministry in the summer after his senior year of high school. He began his preparation for ministry at Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University), in Bethany, Oklahoma. After completing his bachelor's degree in religion, he completed the necessary work for his MA with an emphasis in historical theology.

Following his years in Oklahoma, Smith began twenty years of pastoral ministry in Bisbee, AZ. This was followed by assignments in Tucson, AZ, Kaneohe, HI, and Aurora, CO. He began teaching at Point Loma Nazarene University in the Fall of 1988. Since that time, he has taught courses in Bible, Christian Ministry, and New Testament Greek. He and his wife Gayle married following his junior year in college. They have three children, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. During his years of teaching at PLNU, Smith has kept close ties with the Church of the Nazarene. He enjoys his family, traveling, and reading.
