The term computational science (distinct from computer science) refers to the use of computation to solve problems in the sciences. Most research conducted in the sciences either uses or is guided by technology and mathematics. Consequently, the most effective research teams of the future will be composed of scientists who are aware of computational techniques, together with computation experts who have a basic understanding of the science behind the project.
PLNU’s computational science minor is offered to students who are majoring in a science (biology, chemistry, physics, psychology) or a computational major (mathematics, computer science) and who wish to become conversant in the complementary discipline. The coursework presents computational research tools in the context of scientific problems. Students from the various disciplines work together, learning from each other, the professors, and from hands-on experience about how science and computation provide solutions to problems that could not be achieved by one discipline alone. Computational students increase their knowledge of a particular scientific area, and science students increase their abilities in areas like statistics, scripting, and data management. Both sets of students learn to communicate effectively with the other. The coursework culminates in the completion of a major interdisciplinary project.
