Theatre, minor

Program Overview

Do you have a passion for acting or the treasured works of the stage? Do you love the behind-the-scenes magic of lighting, sound, acoustics, costume, and set design? No matter which side of the curtain you prefer, a minor in theatre could be the perfect fit for you.

As a student of theatre at PLNU, you will be given the tools necessary to gain thorough and passionate expertise in one of the most timeless forms of art and entertainment.

Your coursework as a theatre minor will encompass all the fundamental aspects of the discipline, including the history of the theatre, stagecraft, lighting and makeup techniques, movement, and directing. You will learn general communication styles, and take courses in voice, diction, and acting. You will also be encouraged to enhance your learning with courses in literature, specifically those dealing with great dramas, and will be required to complete a theatre practicum.

Career Opportunities

In an increasingly technological world, the strengths of those with a deep understanding of liberal arts endure. Our society depends on people who can think critically, read analytically, understand interculturally, research deeply, articulate clearly, and write cogently. In fact, employers highly ranked such abilities in "Raising the Bar: Employers’ Views on College Learning in the Wake of the Economic Downturn" (2010). Theatre minors at PLNU cultivate these strengths in a Christian context that nurtures their interconnected intellectual and spiritual lives and equips them to be reasoned and ethical leaders in a variety of careers.

A minor in theatre can lead to careers in the following areas:

  • Onstage Performance
  • Stage Management
  • Lighting Production
  • Sound Production
  • Makeup Artist
  • Costume Design
  • Set Production
