Undergraduate - Liberal Studies
- The School of Education on the main campus at Point Loma offers a liberal studies undergraduate major leading to the multiple subject credential or a special credential for aspiring teachers seeking to teach at the elementary school level. Some liberal studies majors earn both credentials for versatility.
- Special Education
- Any undergraduates who have a heart for serving students with special needs are encouraged to contact the School of Education to discuss options and opportunities in this growing vital field of education. There is an exceptional demand for qualified and credentialed special education teachers in EVERY school district in California and throughout the Nation!
- Aspiring Teachers
- Any undergraduates who are considering teaching as a career are strongly encouraged to contact the School of Education as soon as possible to discuss career opportunities as well as specific options for undergraduate coursework and fieldwork. There is a high demand for middle school and high school with a background in mathematics and the sciences.
Teaching Credentials Preliminary and Professional Clear The School of Education offers preliminary and professional clear credential programs for the following credentials: multiple subject, single subject, and special education (education specialist) at various locations. The School of Education also offers the intern credential program for preliminary credential candidates who have been offered a teaching contract by school districts who cannot fill their openings with credentialed teachers. - Multiple Subject
- The multiple subject teaching credential program of 37 units, enables candidates to teach in self-contained (K-12 ) general education classrooms in California. This is the credential most elementary teachers hold.
- Single Subject
- The single subject teaching credential program of 34 units, enables candidates to teach in specific disciplines (K-12) in which they have demonstrated subject matter competency through an approved examination or coursework. This is the credential that most middle school and high school teachers hold.
- Special Education
- The education specialist credential program of 43-45 units enables candidates to teach special education students. PLNU offers two types of education specialist credentials: mild-moderate and moderate-severe. This credential program is closely aligned with the multiple subject and single subject credential program and can be readily obtained with 14-17 units of additional coursework by candidates already holding one of these general education credentials.
- Intern Credentials
- The internship credential program for multiple subject, single subject, and special education credentials is offered in partnership with specific school districts, county offices or consortia with unfilled needs for credentialed teachers. Intern credential candidates work on contract with strong support from Point Loma faculty as they earn their preliminary credential.
Service Credentials The School of Education offers two services credentials: the counseling or pupil personnel services credential and the administrative services credential. - Counseling
- The counseling or pupil personnel services credential of 45-48 units certifies a credential graduate to work as a school counselor in K-12 public schools, providing comprehensive guidance and counseling services to students.
- Administrative Services
- The Preliminary Administrative Services Credential (24 units) prepares candidates with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions for entry level administrative positions. Once requirements for this credential are met, candidates may apply for a Certificate of Eligibility allowing them to seek administrative positions in California public schools.
- The Professional Clear Administrative Services Credential is offered as a credential only program (6 units) or in conjunction with the Educational Specialist Degree (32 units).
- Intern Credentials
- Intern credentials are available in partnership with specific school districts. Check specific locations.
Degrees Master of Arts in Education The School of Education offers the Master of Arts in Education degree with the following concentrations: Teaching and Learning, Special Education, Counseling and Guidance, and Educational Leadership. - Teaching and Learning
- The M.A. with a concentration in Teaching and Learning is the next level of graduate study after candidates clear their teaching credential through BTSA Induction or an approved Fifth Year Program. This program is ideal for BTSA Induction teachers, private school and charter school teachers, and veteran teachers seeking educational, career, and salary advancement.
- Special Education
- The M.A. with a concentration in Special Education is the next level of graduate study as candidates clear their Level II credentials. This program is ideal for BTSA Induction teachers and experienced special education teachers interested in educational, career, and salary advancement.
- Counseling and Guidance
- The M.A. with a concentration in Counseling and Guidance is the ideal next step for teachers who have a special interest in developing students as whole persons: academically, socially, personally, and vocationally.
- Educational Leadership
- The M.A. with a concentration in Educational Leadership is the next level of graduate study for educators who are completing a Tier I Preliminary Administrative Services credential. This program is ideal for aspiring administrators and veteran teacher leaders interested in educational, career, and salary advancement.
Educational Specialist The Educational Specialist Degree (32 units) is an advanced, post-masters program designed for experienced teachers, counselors and administrators and others interested in the dynamics of organizational leadership and change in a diverse society. The integrated coursework and fieldwork for this degree may be accepted by other institutions of higher education toward the doctoral degree. Certificates The School of Education offers the Reading Certificate and the Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate - Reading Certificate
- The Reading Certificate Program (12 units) is often taken as part of the M.A. in Teaching and Learning or as a stand-alone professional development opportunity for experienced teachers. This program provides the candidate with advanced knowledge, skills, and dispositions to explicitly and significantly improve the reading skills of diverse learners.
- CLAD Certificate
- Through 12 units of approved coursework, candidates develop their ability to address the academic and linguistic needs of English Learners. The School of Education has updated courses to address California’s English Language Development Standards and to implement effective strategies to support the success of second language learners.
