Undergraduate Admission Information

Undergraduate Admission Information Unknown (or inaccessible) property:CurrentPageVersion.PageID

Thank you for your interest in the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program at Point Loma Nazarene University.

As part of the selection process, freshmen apply to PLNU for one full year of prerequisite courses as pre-nursing majors and are screened both by PLNU Admissions and the School of Nursing. Research has shown that success in this demanding Nursing major requires the student to be highly motivated, score well on the SAT exam, have well developed critical thinking skills, do well in math and science, and be service oriented.

prerequisite courses:

  • Inorganic and Organic/Biological Chemistry (5 semester units--with labs)
  • Human Anatomy and Physology (8 semester units with labs)
  • General Psychology of Personal Identity (3 or 4 semester units)
  • College-level algebra (determined by PLNU math placement test)
  • Human Development (3 semester units)--strongly recommended
  • Nutrition (3 semester units--strong recommended prior to NSG 250)

Please review the community college articulation agreements if you are interested in satisfying prerequisites through a community college in the San Diego area.

If you are an Advanced Placement student please see the following documents:

Applications for Sophomore nursing become available the first week in December and are due February 1. Approximately sixty students are accepted into the Sophomore class in fall. We do not admit nursing students in the spring semester.

Each applicant must have a minimum of a 2.7 GPA on all college course work (on a 4 point scale), and nothing less than a 2.3 in any of the prerequisite courses. A repeat of any prerequisite course may disqualify a student from admission to the Nursing program.

The priority at selection time goes to PLNU students who are pre-nursing majors and have completed at least 15 units and 2 semesters at PLNU. After the selection of all qualified PLNU pre-nursing students, any remaining openings will be filled by eligible transfer students.  The Selection Committee will meet to finalize the selection process after all spring grades have been received, and then all students will be notified by mid-June.

PLEASE NOTE: Per agreement with the San Diego Nursing Service Education Consortium and affiliated hospitals, a background check and drug screening will be required prior to your first clinical experience. If a red flag occurs from either your background check or drug screening, this will result in immediate dismissal from the Point Loma Nazarene University BSN program.

This is a great deal of information to process but we feel it will assist you in planning for the exciting challenges ahead of you. I would encourage you to periodically visit our web site. A search here may answer many questions about the program and also allow you to learn more about the campus community. You can also contact me directly with additional questions. And, again, thank you for your interest in a Bachelor of Science Nursing degree at The Point!
