AFA Nationals / University of Nebraska

Pt Loma's Speech Team just returned from the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament in Lincoln Nebraska. We are happy to report that the team did well, placing behind only the University of LaVerne amongst District One (all colleges and universities competing from California, Nevada and Hawaii). Special honors were awarded to Nathan Brisby for advancing to the Semi Finals in Prose Interpretation and to Kanaan for advancing to the Poetry Quarter Finals. But the team would not have done as well without very solid performances by all 6 competing students:
Amanda Bouck

Nathan Brisby

Nicola Koch

Phil Rath

Rick Travis

We were once again reminded of how fleeting life can be. We returned on a flight about midnight Tuesday night because earlier flights had been packed. When Rick and Phil returned to their apartments they realized that this delay might have serendipitously saved their lives. Earlier that day, their close neighbor shot someone twice and took many other neighbors from the apartment complex hostage. The situation ended with a swat raid and shoot out I understand, though I have not yet had the chance to review the news since returning. The police were not allowing people to return to their apartment since it was an active crime scene being investigated at the time Rick and Phil returned from the airport. Talk about close calls.
