Azusa Pacific California Double Up
This past weekend (Friday Oct 17 – Sunday Oct 19) PLNU sent a portion of the speech and debate team to participate in a couple of tournaments held on the Azusa Pacific University campus with over 30 colleges and universities. For the Debate division of the APU Cougar Classic, Point Loma tied for Second in the overall debate sweepstakes race, losing the tie breaker to Northern Arizona University and finishing in Third Place overall. PLNU then won Fourth place in overall Individual Sweepstakes in Individual Events the next day, showing a strong balance between debate and individual speaking events this year.
Angela Compton and Caitlyn Burford won Silver by dropping in the second elimination round (Semi Finals) to Northern Arizona University. Caitlyn also won Tenth Place Speaker in the entire division. Additionally, Angela and Caitlyn advanced to the quarter finals round the day before at the Mt San Antonio College tournament.
Danielle Lawson and John Morris won Gold along with UCLA. John Morris won Fifth Place speaker in the division and Danielle Lawson won Sixth Place.
The teams of Allison Beardsley and Ben Powers, and Nathan Maddix and Jayme Oswald won Bronze Awards in Quarter Finals. Jayme Oswald won Third Speaker in the division and Ben Powers won Seventh Place from a field of nearly 60 novices. At the Mt San Antonio College tournament on Friday MacLean Andrews, Ben Powers and Barbara Gausewitz earned the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth place speakers.
Individual Events Results
On Sunday, October 19th the tournament featured individual events and Lincoln Douglas debate.
Lincoln Douglas Debate
All three of our Junior Division Lincoln Douglas debaters (Ciera Wilson, Mac Andrews, and John Morris) advanced to the Quarter final round, where all three won and advanced to the Semi Final round. Ciera and Mac were paired as one semi final debate, which did not take place since they are from the same program, and John Morris dropped to a student from Pasadena City College in the other semi final round. As the higher seed, Ciera advanced over Mac to represent Point Loma in the final round against Pasadena City College.
Individual Events Results:
- Angela Compton: 5th Place Open Extemporaneous Speaking.
- Ben Powers: 6th Place Novice Extemp
- Caitlyn Burford: Finalist Open Impromptu (maybe 4th place?)
- Chris Gutierrez 5th Place Open Persuasion
- Jayme Oswald 2nd Novice Impromptu
We also had some wonderful talks with very talented potential transfer competitors who may join us next year. Special thanks to Professor Gentzkow and our many alumni and former competitors like Jordan Cherry, Leia Larson, Ben Kautzer, Sarah Motte, Josh Cangelosi, and many others who work so hard to help prepare these student speakers.
