California Double Up Concordia

Friday, October 14, 2011 (All day) - Sunday, October 16, 2011 (All day)

The PLNU Speech and Debate Team just returned from its first full service forensics tournament of the season, hosted by Irvine Valley College and Concordia University Irvine this past Friday through Sunday. There were approximately 35 colleges and universities competing from across the country.   It was so big that it took three days from 12-14 hours each, and two campuses to host these events.  So please forgive some of our participating students  if they seem a little bleary eyed this morning due to returning to campus around midnight last night for most of them.  Please also forgive my syntax.  There really was a sentence in there somewhere if you looked hard enough. J

There were a number of computer glitches causing delays throughout the weekend, so forgive me for not posting all of the individuals’ accolades if  I have missed any, but I did want to pass along that this very new group of students represented the campus well, winning First Place Debate Sweepstakes for the two combined tournaments, and Third Place in Overall Sweepstakes for both debate and individual events in the Four Year College Divisions (behind Western Kentucky and Rice University).  I should also mention that the two host schools had very large and very talented entries, and withdrew themselves from the sweepstakes consideration rather than win their own tournaments.

Finally, a big thanks to our coaches and alumni who helped to coach and judge for this event.  It is so exciting to see so many of our alumni come back and help at these events, and to see others involved in coaching other programs too, and doing well for their new programs.

Here are the results that I do know at this time.

Concordia Double Up Tournament #1 (Parliamentary Debate, Lincoln Douglass Debate and Individual Events) on Friday and Saturday.

Novice Parli Debate:  Stephanie Haas and Emily Schaeffer – Bronze Award

Ryan Willy and Sam Mercaldo:  Bronze Award

Junior Parli Debate:    Richard Cline and Kayla Cook – Bronze Award

Our three senior teams in Parli Debate had sufficient win loss records to advance to the elimination rounds, but missed the cut based on the speaker point tiebreaker in place.
