Date:
Saturday, January 15, 2000 (All day) - Sunday, January 16, 2000 (All day)
Location:
Cal State

We took six students (2 Senior and 1 Novice teams) to the Coyote Classic debate tournament hosted by Cal State San Bernardino. There were 9 colleges and universities competing, including us, the host school, USC, UCLA, the Claremont Colleges, San Francisco State, Cal State Los Angeles and others.

In the Senior Division of almost 20 teams they advanced the top 6 to partial quarter finals. Both Point Loma teams advanced. With a preliminary round record of 5 wins and 1 loss the team of Jason Reilly (a novice debaters pulled up to compete in open) and James Adams dropped in Quarter Finals. The team of Rick Travis and Phil Rath (4 wins / 2 losses) won their Quarter final round and dropped in Semis to the team from San Francisco State that won the tournament. Phil received a trophy for Third Place Speaker in the tournament.

In the Novice Division, our team of Evan Rutledge and Janae Magee won the Final Round and took First Place in the contest. Evan was award Second Place Speaker, and Janae won Fourth Place Speaker honors.

Most of these students did not have classes on Friday past noon when we left, but I would be happy to speak with any professors to verify that the above students were participating in a school activity. My apologies for not attending to this in advance.
