El Camino PSCFA Warm-up Debate

Friday, September 23, 2005 (All day)

The Point Loma Debate team participated in its first debate tournament of the year this past Friday at El Camino College. It was a fairly small scrimmage of colleges in the Southern California area. Point Loma took five teams. Our two senior level teams (Andrew Hoag and Griffith Vertican, and Elly Garner and Jordan Cherry) both went undefeated, and earned awards of superiority. No other school had an undefeated team in this division. Andrew Hoag was named Top Speaker of the senior division. Jordan Cherry, Griffith Vertican and Elly Garner were named 4th, 5th, and 6th speakers respectively.

The PLNU Speech and Debate team has won the national championship for yearlong results in parliamentary debate for two of the last three years. Most of those top students have now graduated, or are studying abroad this year. This year’s team is much smaller, younger and less experienced than in past years, but they are up to the challenge, as these early results indicate.

The three novice PLNU teams, competing in their first tournament ever, each came within one decision of winning an award of Excellence. Rachel Simonson was named the Second Place Speaker in the division.
