National christian College Invitational (Azusa Pacific)

The Point Loma Speech and Debate Team competed this past weekend at the National Christian College Forensics Invitational Tournament hosted by Azusa Pacific University. This is a special tournament that is open to members of the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities. It is an outstanding experience focusing issues of faith and forensics in an environment of prayer and fellowship.
The PLNU Team won First Place in combined Debate and Individual Events School Sweepstakes Awards, narrowly beating out Azusa Pacific by only a few scant points. We also won Fourth Place Sweepstakes honors for the Individual Events Only division. The names of the PLNU students participating on this year's National Championship Team are listed below.
Many won individual honors and awards as well, which are noted next to their names. Some of the other Coalition schools winning top awards for competition included Azusa Pacific, Cal Baptist, Biola, Cedarville, Malone, and others. Cedarville won first place in Individual Events Only Division.
Point Loma also accomplished a distinctive honor we have never before been fortunate enough to experience at any tournament, let alone a National Championship Tournament. We entered nine debate teams in the tournament, five in Novice and four Open divisions. All nine advanced to the quarterfinal round. In Novice Parliamentary Debate we advanced five teams to Quarter Finals. Two of those teams won their Quarter Finals and then won their Semi Finals meaning that Point Loma had the only teams in Finals.
This creates what we call a close out. No debate takes place and both teams are considered tied for first place. In the Open Division of Debate we advanced all four PLNU teams to Quarter Finals, and all four teams won!
This meant that Point Loma closed out the Semi Final Round, and all four PLNU teams are considered National Champions as they tied for First Place.

While not everyone won individual awards all contributed to the team championship.
