NCCFI Christian College Nationals Cal Baptist

Date:
Saturday, March 12, 2005 (All day) - Monday, March 14, 2005 (All day)
The Point Loma Nazarene University Speech and Debate Team just returned from the NCCFI Christian College National Speech and Debate Championship Tournament hosted by California Baptist University late Monday evening. Point Loma won Second Place overall amongst Division One schools, and also won Second Place amongst Division One Debate schools, and Third Place in Division One Individual Events.
In individual events we had many multiple award winners, including Griffith Vertican, who is now the National Champion in both Persuasion and Informative speaking. Our debate program advanced into the elimination bracket five of the seven Senior division teams we entered and two of the three Novice teams we entered. By comparison, the next highest team in Open Division advanced only two teams to Octa Finals. All five of our Senior Teams and won their Octa Finals rounds and advanced to Quarterfinals and beyond. Chris Champine and LeAnn Wiley won Second Place in Open Division debate and Elly Garner and April Griffin won Second place in Novice Debate.
The team will be attending one more major National Championship this year, this one for Parliamentary Debate, the main focus for our program. Unfortunately it will take place this week in Lubbock, Texas. The term “unfortunate” prefaces the timing, not necessarily the location of the tournament. J We fight like the dickens to avoid missed class time, as we know that academics are of primary importance. Unfortunately, these two championships were booked on back-to-back weeks. Thank you for your patience with those few students fortunate enough to qualify for this up coming tournament who will be missing some classes from Wednesday through Monday.
