Monica Abeler, Physical Therapist

Monica Abeler graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2007 with a BA in Athletic Training.  Upon graduation she took a head athletic training position at Westview High School in the Poway School District where Ms. Abeler was in charge of working with the athletic teams throughout the year.  This entailed managing prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation of  athletic related injuries of approximately 1,000 student athletes every sports season.  While working at Westview Ms. Abeler completed her MA in Kinesiology with an Emphasis in Athletic Training from Fresno Pacific University. 

In 2010 Ms. Abeler went on to pursue her Doctorate in Physical Therapy after being accepted into the program at Regis University in Denver, CO.  Her experience as a physical therapist includes working 3 months with the Air Force Academy while as a student in Colorado Springs, CO along with multiple outpatient and skilled nursing facilities.  Ms. Abeler currently works full time as a physical therapist at Longevity Physical Therapy, which is an outpatient orthopedic clinic; and she is currently pursing further specialty certification as a sports certified specialist (SCS).  Ms. Abeler's current certifications include certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS), corrective exercise specialist (CES), and active release technique (ART) certified, as well as being a certified athletic trainer (ATC).

Dr. Dan Gambino, President and CEO

After completing his undergraduate degree in Biology and Human Nutrition, Dr. Gambino went on to Life University in Atlanta, GA, attending on a rugby scholarship and graduated in 1990. He is a member of the International Chiropractic Association, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, is licensed to practice chiropractic in six states and has owned 4 offices. He is Chairman of the Membership Department for the California Chiropractic Association, the largest state association in the world, as well as the Vice President of the San Diego County District. He is a Founding Member of Champions for Life, a non-profit organization geared toward making the world a brighter place through educating future chiropractors. He is a board member of LIFEforce1000, a group of 1000 doctors worldwide have committed to making a chiropractic education or chiropractic care available for everyone on the planet. He is the president of C.O.R.E.- Chiropractors On the Road to Excellence, a national organization of chiropactors who train leaders in the profession. He is the Founder and hosts the largest PreChiropractic Club in California. He is in private pediatric and family practice here in San Diego. His wife, Dr. Kimberly Gambino, is also a chiropractor. Together, they also own Gambino Family Chiropractic Center in Clarksburg, WV.

Judith Olson, Masters of Occupational Therapy Program Director

Judith Olson is the Masters of Occupational Therapy Program Director at the California Campus of the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.  Dr. Olson has been an occupational therapist for over 30 years and has over 20 years of experience in occupational therapy education.  She received her MOT degree from Columbia University in New York City and her PH. D. in Early Childhood Education from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.  Her area of specialization in occupational therapy is infant mental health.  She has co-authored several articles and is the co-editor of the book “ Mothering Occupations:  Challenge, Agency and Participation.” Dr. Olson was previously the Program Director for the MOT Program at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI.  Additionally, she held a variety of different administrative positions there. Dr. Olson is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (FAOTA).

Dr. Olson is married and has four adult children and two adorable twin granddaughters.

Derrick Price, Educator, Consultant, and Personal Trainer

Derrick Price has been active on many levels in the fitness industry for over a decade.  He holds a Masters of Science Degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion with an emphasis on injury prevention and performance enhancement from the California University of Pennsylvania where he has also spent time as an Adjunct Faculty member teaching courses in Exercise Program Design.  Aside from personal training at the acclaimed Function First exercise studio in San Diego, CA, Mr. Price is also a Master Trainer for ViPR, PowerPlate, Core-Tex, Technogym, and Hyperwear. He began his educational career as a Master Instructor for the National Academy of Sports Medicine and has since moved on to become a Faculty Member for the Personal Training Academy (PTA) Global and Institute of Motion.

Dustyn Severns, Orthopedic Physician Assistant

Dustyn Severns is a practicing Orthopedic Physician Assistant at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center.  He has been providing surgical, inpatient and outpatient care for orthopedic surgery patients for nearly 11 years.  In addition to clinical duties, he also provides project management for industry supported and in-house clinical research projects.  As a Physician Assistant, Mr. Severns enjoys developing meaningful relationships with patients and staff while providing high-level medical care and progressive practice improvement initiatives.  Mr. Severns has had the privilege to work in a large academic institution, as well as private practices.  

Mr. Severns graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2000 with a B.A. in Physical Education/Athletic Training.  He became certified as an athletic trainer and orthopedic technologist in 2001 and started P.A. school in August 2001. Mr. Severns graduated from Arizona School of Health Sciences with a Masters in Physician Assistant studies in 2003.  He has been married to his beautiful wife, Mary, for 19 years and has two children ages 10 and 8.  

Fitness Together - Point Loma

Greg Sterner, Physical Therapist, Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

Ever since Greg Sterner was in high school, he knew he wanted to help people get fit, strong and stay that way.  Mr. Sterner decided to pursue his passion and graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy.  For the past ten years he has been helping people get in the best shape of their lives as a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and a Nutrition Specialist through the American Academy of Sports Dietitians and Nutritionists (AASDN).  In addition, Mr. Sterner has also been helping people overcome injuries and obstacles to fitness as a Physical Therapist, with his elite certification as a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a title only a small percentage of the country hold, as well as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. 

Mr. Sterner was eager to take his knowledge and experience helping people one step further, and has recently opened Fitness Together, a one-on-one private personal training studio in the heart of Point Loma at Liberty Station.  Fitness Together specializes in one-on-one workouts with your personal trainer in a private training suite, where clients can work on individual goals and where trainers are sensitive to special conditions, such as injuries. 

In addition to changing the lives of his clients, Mr. Sterner has volunteered and spoken to senior groups on such topics as arthritis and physical training.  He has also co-presented seminars in La Jolla and Aspen, CO on sports performance training for athletes in all realms of sports.

Russ and Karen Vande Vegte, Physical Therapists

Russ Vande Vegte graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 1982 with a degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training.  He continued his education at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL receiving a degree in Physical Therapy in 1986. Vande Vegte has been working at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego for the past 26 years.  He works in an outpatient orthopedic setting sharing his time between patient care and administrative duties.  Mr. Vande Vegte has been married for 25 years to his wife, Karen, who is also a physical therapist.  They have 3 young adult children.  He has enjoyed coaching soccer the past 15 years.  He also enjoys the great outdoors and participating in various sports.

Karen Vande Vegte graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL in 1986 with a degree in Physical Therapy.  While there, she met her husband, Russ, who is also a physical therapist.  Karen works at Kaiser Permanente and has specialized in various areas of Physical Therapy including acute care, stroke rehab, orthopedics, vestibular therapy, and currently the area of urogynecology.  Mrs. Vande Vegte enjoys participating in many extracurricular activities including sports and spending time with family and friends.
