I wanted to thank you all for your words of encouragement and concern for the students attending the National Parliamentary Debate Association held this last weekend in Omaha, Nebraska. But I especially wanted to thank you for your prayers. They were very helpful. Despite an outbreak of flu on the team, they still had the finest National Tournament performance I can ever remember, even stronger than last year when we won the tournament and were declared National Champions.
Although we did not repeat as National Tournament Sweepstakes Champions, we still came in one just one point lower than the two teams tied for First Place(Truman State and Cal State Berkeley). Point Loma was declared the Third Place Sweepstakes Winner for the entire tournament. Of perhaps greater importance to our team was the word that we won the Second Place Year Long Sweepstakes, just behind Cal State Berkeley. This award is an attempt to measure the success of teams over the entire year considering all the different tournaments attended. Over the four years we have been in this organization we have been fortunate enough to place 2nd, 6th, 5th and now 2nd respectively for the year long sweepstakes winners, even though the organization continues to grow significantly each year.
This year's teams at the National Tournament also managed to advance further than any debate teams from Point Loma have at prior national tournaments. Last year we were lucky enough to advance the highest number of teams at the tournament from the preliminary rounds to the elimination rounds (tied with one or two others) with three teams making it to the Triple Octa Finals, one of those cleared to the Double Octa Finals. This year we again led the pack (tied only with Truman State) by advancing four teams to Triple Octa Finals. Three of those advanced to the Double Octa Finals, and two cleared to the Octa Final round. No prior Point Loma team has been an Octa Finalist at Nationals to my understanding. Even our Novice team was awarded Second Place in the Novice Team category, showing the future is strong.

Following is the specific placements of the award winning teams:

Jason Anderson and Linsey Kitchens - Triple Octa Finals

Nathan Brisby and James Adams - Double Octa Finals

Katie Angliss and David Graham - Octa Finals

Phil Rath and Rick Travis - Octa Finals

Jason Riley and Jeff Anderson Second Place Novice Team

We are especially grateful for your prayer support. This morning we discovered that two vans filled with close friends and competitors from Rice University were involved in a fatal van crash on their way back from the national championship tournament to their school. As the NPDA President it was my honor to award a trophy to one of their students that we now know was killed. Four of his teammates were also injured but will recover. They were just pulled over to the side of the freeway due to freeway construction and a pick up truck plowed into the rear van smashing it into the lead van. Please keep not only the Rice Forensics Team in your prayers, but also the other Pt Loma groups that travel for athletics, music, drama, ministry, admissions recruiting, etc. . .
