Pacific meets the Delta, Delta/Pacific
PLNU Speech and Debate competed with over 40 colleges and universities from across the United States, winning 3rd Place Sweepstakes honors for the combined tournaments at University of the Pacific (UoP) and San Joaquin Delta College, and 4th Place Sweepstakes at the UoP tournament held November 1-3 in Stockton and Sacramento.
In individual events PLNU students excelled in Open Division Impromptu and Extemporaneous speaking. In Impromptu team president Chris Danks won Third Place, Daniel Spencer won 6th Place, and Freshman Nick Kjelgaard was a Semi Finalist. In Extemporaneous Speaking Chris and Nick were also Semi Finalists.
In Novice Lincoln Douglass (LD) Debate Frosh Lauren Jacobs was a Quarter Finalist, and in Open LD PLNU debaters Kayla Cook, Chris Danks, Kasey Graves, and Nick Kjelgaard all advanced to Octa Finals before dropping.
And in one of the toughest Parliamentary Debate fields in the nation, Brandon West and Josh Gilbert advanced to the second elimination round in the Open Division (Octafinals) and Chris Danks and his freshman partner Caleb Moore advanced to the third elimination round (Quarters) before dropping. This is the furthest a PLNU team has advanced for some time at this particular tournament.
In the Novice Division, Lauren Jacobs and Jordan Hill advanced to the fifth elimination round (finals), at one of their first tournaments ever. Neither had any formal debate training prior to enrolling in the argumentation class this semester, and now they will be moving up to the junior division.
For debate speaker awards, Lauren Jacobs was named the Top Novice speaker in the entire tournament. In the Junior Division of Parliamentary Debate, Nick Kjelgaard won the Fourth Place speaker, and Chris Danks was named 19th speaker in an extremely competitive field of Senior Division speakers.
