PSCFA Spring Championship / L.A. Valley

Point Loma just returned from one of the largest and most competitive tournaments we have attended all year. Against a field of almost 40 Colleges and Universities PLNU was awarded Third Place Sweepstakes. In addition to a fine showing (details below) we managed to recruit 3 of the top community college students at the tournament, including one student that received a cash prize and trophy for being one of the top Community College competitors all year. He also won top speaker in Senior Debate, Second Place in Senior Impromptu, and First Place in Senior Extemp. We are very fortunate to bring three such strong students to our campus next year.

DEBATE: When I read the first round debate resolution on the Means Testing approach to Social Security Reform, which is exactly what Dr. Jim McEliece spoke to our debates about last Tuesday, I knew it would be a good tournament. :-) All Five of our Senior Teams advanced to the Octa Finals round from a field of over 30 senior teams. Only one other school had multiple teams advance in Senior Debate. Three of our teams advanced to the Semi Final rounds. We finally lost in finals on a split decision to the team from Claremont that won our Round Robin tournament of the top teams in the country. Katie Angliss won a speaker award for being the Second Place Speaker in the Senior division. The Senior Teams and how far they advanced is listed below:

Additionally, Chris Iverson when paired with a novice from Cal Baptist also advanced as far as the Quarter Finals before loosing in the Novice Division.
