The Pt Loma Speech and Debate team won First Place in the Four Year Sweepstakes Division at the PSCFA Swing Championship tournament this past weekend by Cal State University of Los Angeles, against many top colleges and universities like Cal State Long Beach, Northern Arizona University and UCLA. Over 40 Colleges and Universities competed at this large regional event, including top 2 and 4 year programs from throughout California and Arizona. In addition to receiving the 9 all academic awards mentioned in last week’s note, and speaking with potential recruits from some of our top competitors, our students won many top awards in both debate and individual events.

Our Novices also won Second Place Novice Sweepstakes, and PLNU Senior and team co-president Chris Gutierrez won one of only two Bovero Awards offered to outstanding league competitors from four year schools in PSCFA. It has also been exciting to see our alumni like Andrew Hoag, Josh Cangelosi, Cynthia Laviere and Tim Kamermayer have gone on to help coach other top programs in the area, even when their teams occasionally beat their alma mater. Ouch. Special thanks to the PLNU alumni like Prof. Melissa Lazaro, Ben Kautzer, Jordan Cherry, and Leia Larson who have spent so much time this year helping coach our own large group of competitors. Please forgive our students if they are in your classes today in case they are not quite so energetic as we got back about midnight last night after three long days of competition. Likewise, forgive my errors of omission or commission in this note.
