The Pt. Loma debate team competed in its first tournament of the year on Friday, September 25, at a four round PSCFA Warm Up scrimmage hosted by El Camino College, in Torrance.
Rather than put the 7 beginning teams from the Argumentation and Debate class in the Rookie Division for those attending their first tournament ever, we placed them up in the Novice Division, where they competed against many teams that began intercollegiate debate last year. Despite this leap, one of those teams (Brooke Rake and Kassandra Sandstrom) managed to win all four of their debates, winning an award of Superiority. The other teams also did well and learned a tremendous amount about the activity. The future appears to be in good hands.
Our Senior Division debaters also had a fine showing even though some teams were switched around a bit due to students missing the tournament to take the LSAT on Saturday. There were four awards given out in the Senior Division of debate. Point Loma earned three of those four awards. Barbara Gausewitz and Ciera Wilson won all four of their rounds and earned the Certificate of Superiority. The teams of Danielle Lawson and Ashley Nuckels, and MacLean Andrews and Daniel Nadal each lost only one round, and earned Certificates of Excellence.
Thanks for your support and encouragement of our team’s students. It means a great deal to them.
