PSCFA Warm-up (Nov, Jr, Sr) El Camino
The Point Loma Nazarene University debate team participated in its first tournament of the year this past Friday, September 21st at El Camino College at the PSCFA Warm Up Scrimmage.
This year’s team has some big shoes to fill and is deeply indebted to last year’s team that won First Place in the NPDA National Championship Tournament and also won First Place in the NPDA nationwide yearlong sweepstakes race. The current team realizes that those senior debaters are no longer competing, and that there is only one team member returning with more than one year of experience on our squad. That person has two years of experience. So it is a young, but determined group.
This past weekend shows though that they are taking the challenge seriously. Our three senior division teams at this tournament (Caitlyn Burford and Christopher Gutierrez, Katie Lucas and Alysa Pfeifer, and David Kruckenberg and Leia Larson) finished with Awards of Excellence, earning the First, Second and Fourth place seeds in this event that did not advance to elimination rounds. Ranking as top speakers in this division were Christopher (2nd Place) Caitlyn (4th Place) and Katie (6th Place).
We even started three brand new teams in the Novice division, rather than the more protected Rookie division for which they all qualified. All three teams met with success. Brandon Walsh and Paul Young were even recognized with an Award of Excellence for winning three of their four debate rounds. Brandon and Paul were also ranked as top speakers in their division winning 6th speaker and 8th speaker respectively.
The team appreciates the support of each of the faculty members as they are using material from their various classes in these interdisciplinary debates. Please do me a favor though and don't let the team members know that this year is suppose to be a rebuilding year. :-)
