Round Robin and Sunset Cliffs Hosted Events
I just wanted to thank the campus community and our speech and debate team and alumni for pitching in to host the two major forensics tournaments held at Point Loma Friday, through Sunday. Over 40 colleges and universities from across the country enjoyed postcard weather, our beautiful campus, and a gracious and supportive community. It was fun to see 5-600 normally stressed out debaters walk around in awe at the majesty that is our campus. Many of them seemed to be just life support systems for smiles. Other mentioned strong desires to transfer here. In fact one of the students we are very excited to welcome to next year’s incoming class of transfers won First Place in the Junior Division.
Special thanks to the professors who allowed our debaters to miss classes on Friday to participate in and help host this event.
While being good hosts is always our top priority for such an event, we were able to let a few of our teams participate this year, two of which advanced to the elimination rounds. For the first time ever a Point Loma team (Barbara Gausewitz and Alex Pineda) went undefeated winning all six preliminary rounds becoming the top seed team in the Senior Division. They won their double octa final round and octa final round finally dropping in Quarter Finals, and Barbara won a speaker’s gavel for being a top ten speaker in the field.
The Freshmen team of Frank Daniel and Kasey Graves continue to impress by advancing to the elimination bracket in a very tough field of over 70 teams. Their future is bright. Several other PLNU teams had sufficient win loss records to advance, but just lost the tie breaker by a few speaker points. This bodes well for the teams at the upcoming regional and national championships.
