UCSD Invitational Debate Tournament
This past Saturday and Sunday (January 20-21) the Pt Loma debate team won First Place Sweepstakes honors at the UCSD Invitational debate tournament in the four year university division despite tough competition from programs like UCSD, UCLA, Northern Arizona University, the Claremont Colleges, and U. C. Davis. The PLNU team of Tim Kamermayer and Griffith Vertican won the entire tournament. The tournament offered only one large Open division of competition. Most of the PLNU teams were novice or junior competitors, many having just started in debate at the beginning of last semester. Yet, four of our seven teams advanced to the Octa-final round.
This was the first Open level tournament for the teams of Alysa Pfeifer and Jamie Wanta, and Jackie Lucas and Cody Ellis. They advanced to the Octa-final round before losing. Angela Compton and Jordan Cherry, won their Octa-final round and advanced to Quarter-finals before losing on a split decision. Tim Kamermayer and Griffith Vertican won their Octa-final, Quarter-final, and Semi-final rounds to advance to the Final round where they prevailed in a very tough round over the Claremont Colleges team in a debate asking our side to defend President Ford's pardon of President Nixon.
Speaker awards went to the following Point Loma debaters
- Tim Kamermayer - Third Place Speaker
- Griffith Vertican - Fourth Place Speaker
- Jordan Cherry - Eighth Place Speaker
- Angela Compton - Ninth Place Speaker
