How To Establish An Endowed Scholarship
Endowed scholarship funds may be named for the donor, or for a friend or relative of his/her choice. A gift to scholarship endowment is an especially significant memorial; for perpetuity it will provide educational opportunity to a succession of carefully selected young men and women. An endowed scholarship may be established through a gift of $25,000 or more. Endowed scholarships are currently funded once the principal reaches $25,000. If you are not able to fully fund the endowment with a single gift, your pledge to establish the fund may be extended for three years with an initial commitment of $9,000. As the donor, you may place reasonable restrictions on the selection process (i.e., to award aid to particular academic disciplines, to students attaining a required grade point average or demonstrating financial need).
How to Establish an Endowed Chair
The endowed chair exists to foster the educational purposes of PLNU and to enhance the academic excellence of the institution by attracting and retaining high caliber faculty to benefit our students. The genius of an endowed chair stems from the student's ability to learn from these distinguished faculty members at no additional cost to them. At the same time, an endowed chair honors both the individual or individuals in whose name it is endowed and the faculty member who holds the chair.
Types of Endowed Chairs
There are two types of named endowed faculty positions at the university based on funding levels detailed below:
- Endowed Professorship - A gift of $1,500,000 provides additional resources for the holder of the professorship and funding for the respective department's faculty/student mentoring program. Funding an endowment at this level does not add an additional faculty line to the respective department, but it does provide a significant benefit by helping to fund the department's teaching program.
- Endowed Chair - A gift of $2,500,000 provides a new faculty line for the university in the designated department(s). This level of support allows the university to add a distinguished teacher/scholar who will bring rich gifts to their students in and out of the classroom.
How to Contribute to Existing Endowed Scholarships
Any amount may be given to increase existing endowed scholarships. Friends of the University have established a number of scholarships to assist students attending PLNU. Generally, these scholarships are awarded only to continuing students, i.e., current students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Various academic and other departments are responsible for awarding these scholarships, and each department has its own application process and deadline. If you are interested in adding to an existing scholarship, view the list of existing endowed scholarships and select a scholarship from the list under the department that interests you.
