Chris Roberts Produces New Film

Chris Roberts (04) is an independent film producer based out of LA. His first claim to fame was producing one of the top five finalist commercials for the 2009 Doritos Crash the Super Bowl ad competition.

Now, Roberts has produced his first feature film, a psychological thriller called The Appearing, with director Daric Gates, Olivet Nazarene University alum and husband of Holly (Wright) Gates (04).

The Appearing explores the damaging effects of unconfessed sin. After the death of his daughter, Michael Brody (played by Will Wallace), leaves his job as a big city cop to become a small town deputy; a child goes missing his first day on the job, hitting close to home. At the same time, his wife, Rachel (played by Emily Brooks), finds herself haunted by the ghost of a little girl. Thinking she’s in the midst of an emotional breakdown, she tries to solve the mystery, only to uncover a shocking truth about her past and discover a new evil lurking in the darkness. As Michael begins to put the pieces of his case together, he learns that this sad incident isn’t anything new for the town. For the last 20 years strange things have been happening, and they’re all taking place in a haunted house in the woods. Mysteries converge when Michael finds out more about his wife’s past and her connection to the sheriff (played by Patrick Swayze’s younger brother, Don Swayze) and perhaps even murder. The film also stars Dean Cain of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993) as the town’s doctor.

The majority of the film was shot at Central City Studios, and the crew also had the opportunity to shoot at the Universal Studios Psycho house for a day.

Both Roberts and Gates are Hitchcock fans, and their shared passion for suspense helped in the creation of The Appearing. In between producing a Doritos commercial and a feature thriller, Roberts won the 168-Hour Film Project – a faith-based, timed filmmaking competition – with his film Up in the Air. This opened more doors for him to meet “other believers at the top of their game in the industry.”

Roberts is currently developing a kids’ TV show based on a book series he grew up reading. Though he can’t reveal much information about the show until it is released, he was able to share what the show means to him. “It was amazing, out of the blue, how I got in touch with the author, and he loved my idea to turn his series into a show,” he said. “It’s something near and dear to my heart, because it shaped my imagination, and now I can give my own homage to it.”

Roberts and Gates are also working on a financial thriller together. Roberts lives in Burbank, Calif., with his wife Naphtali, who he met at their church, Ecclesia, in Hollywood. Chris and Naphtali are expecting their first baby.
