PLNU Graduate Gets Padres TV Opportunity

One PLNU graduate is making the most of his recent internship experience.  Ryan Pavin, a 2010 broadcast journalism graduate, recently interned with Cox Channel 4 for Padres games.  Over a dozen PLNU students have interned with the Padres baseball cablecast over the past ten years.  Pavin worked alongside director Tom Ceterski and producer Ed Barnes.  Ceterski is considered one of the top sports broadcasting directors on the west coast.

During his time with Channel 4, Pavin was given the opportunity to run camera for pregame and, occasionally, was given a shot at live games and replays.

Every day was something new and exciting,” said Pavin.

As a broadcast journalism graduate, Pavin has always enjoyed camera work.  To be extended this opportunity has made him think about a career in television.  Despite the stress of the internship, it has taught him a lot.

Shooting something that was going out live always adds a ton of pressure because their is no retake,” said Pavin. “So there was pressure on me to produce. I was having 4-5 shots making it on air every night.”

With on camera experience and other knowledge of the job, Pavin has high hopes for employment.

“I believe that there is a good chance that I could become the scoreboard operator for next season with Channel 4 but I have also been able to work three Chargers games this year,” said Pavin. “That is very cool and shows where opportunities can take you.”

In the end Pavin hopes to get into sports broadcasting and eventually direct or produce something in the sports world.
