PLNU Professors Publish Article on Tenure

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

PLNU School of Education professors Gary L. Railsback and Jill Hamilton-Bunch and political science professor Rosco Williamson published their journal article “Faculty Perceptions about Tenure at Private Christian Liberal Arts Colleges” on August 6, 2012. The article looks into the opinions of faculty members at Christian colleges and universities, including PLNU, to gain a better understanding of the perceived effectiveness of tenure. The study investigates faculty at 38 institutions of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) with a sample of about 1,000 faculty members with tenure, 700 on a tenure track, 400 who are not on a tenure track, and another 400 from institutions without tenure.

Their research supports continued tenure at private Christian universities to create a competitive marketplace for hiring. Faculty who do not achieve tenure are not necessarily released from the institution, but they are employed on a year-by-year basis, whereas faculty who achieve tenure have more job security.
