Speech and Debate Competes in First Tournament of the Season
The PLNU Speech and Debate Team (Forensics Team) competed at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association (PSCFA) at El Camino College for its first tournament of the season Sept. 28. Joining them were members of the argumentation and debate classes, who were in their first ever tournament experience.
The debate follows a parliamentary format and delves into many different topics at each tournament. Students rely heavily upon the material they learn in their other classes, beyond the debate class, as well as the support of professors, who allow students to attend tournaments that conflict with classes.
No elimination rounds or speaker awards were presented at the tournament given the format of this particular contest. However, students were awarded the following certificates for their respective debates:
- Open Division Certificate of Excellence (one loss): Haley Courtney, Sydney Awakuni, Christopher Danks, and James Wilson
- Junior Division Certificate of Superiority (no losses): Claire Schalin and Daniel Robert Spencer
- Novice Division Certificate of Excellence: Hannah Andrade and Elizabeth Pode
- Rookie Division Certificate of Excellence: Tess Andrews, Dani Bartello, Tyler Klindt, Mandie Lira, Josh Kimball, and Hayden Reynolds
