San Diego, CA – Point Loma’s student TV channel has a new news manager and a new look for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Coastline News, the bi-monthly newscast, is now under the leadership of senior Katie Connor. “We have tried to up-date Coastline News to compete with other school’s newscasts,” said Conner. “Channel 3 manager, Ericka Roberts, created graphics for entertainment, weather and sports.” Conner added that, when it comes to the individual stories, “Each story has an over-the-shoulder graphic to help make all the stories for uniform.”

The Coastline news set has also received a face lift. This project was undertaken by the whole Coastline crew and with the help of students from the Broadcast Journalism and Media Communication majors. Connor and Roberts spearheaded the design of the new set.

Several other improvements have enhanced the newscasts. One change is that Mike Spears directs all the newscasts, rather than having a new director for each show. “Mike is an excellent director,” said Conner. “He works very well with the production crew.” Another change is the use of CNN stories through a special arrangement with the network. CNN provides video feeds free of charge to colleges and universities that have closed-circuit TV programming. “CNN really adds a lot to Coastline News,” Conner stated. “It gives us an opportunity to use current, national and international stories in the newscast.”

Coastline News is “broadcast” live every other Thursday at 8p.m. on channel 3. Starting in January, the student TV channel changes to 23.
