Three years ago, Art Wilmore, associate head coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams, and alumnus Jared Callahan (05) started a multi-sport event, later named Superfest, to reach out to the San Diego community by opening PLNU’s campus to youth groups and families. Youth from 5-12 years old have enjoyed Superfest PLNU with coaches, athletes, and celebrity guests ever since. Participants receive athletic instruction, develop their skills, and enjoy competitions. Each participant receives a Bible, and at the closing ceremony in the Greek, the Gospel is presented with an opportunity for youth to receive the Lord.
Last year, the following athletes shared their testimonies: Allyson Felix (2012 Olympic gold medalist in track and field); San Diego Chargers Darrell Stuckey and Vincent Brown; MLB players Adrian Gonzalez, Heath Bell, and Nick Hundley; and former heavy weight boxing champion Chris Byrd.
This summer, Wilmore and Marcus Preciado, sports director for the Rock Church, put on the first Superfest International event in Manila, Philippines, with 175 youth attending. They will return next June to coordinate the multi-sport event at the Olympic training site in Manila.
The next Superfest PLNU will be on Jan. 26, 2013.
