Professor Havens earned an MA in Mathematics from San Diego State University with an emphasis in education and a BS in Engineering Physics from Point Loma Nazarene University. While he has always enjoyed the study of abstract mathematics, he is passionate about the study of mathematics education and applied mathematics. His goal is to develop a high level of mathematical theory so that students learn to use it to solve real-world problems from a variety of disciplines in the classroom environment.
Professor Havens has taught college mathematics in the greater San Diego area since 2012, including PLNU, SDSU, USD, Southwestern College, Grossmont College, and Cuyamaca College. He started teaching at PLNU full-time in 2024. He was raised at San Diego First Church of the Nazarene and currently attends Grace Church San Diego with his wife Lauragrace. He has many hobbies, including sports, gaming, traveling, music, and walking his dog Winston. His favorite sports include bowling, basketball, tennis, baseball, and football.
