Overview

This standalone course will familiarize you with the physiological principles, function, integration and homeostasis of the human body from the cellular level to organ system level. This class is fully online and asynchronous so you can learn on your own schedule!

In this course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of each of these systems in the human body: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, sensory, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, excretory, and reproductive systems. This course perfectly complements the human anatomy course, and fulfills the physiology prerequisite.

You’ll be able to study human physiology using cutting-edge online technology and virtual dissections.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered fully online and asynchronously with the opportunity to meet with instructors via Zoom. Students use cutting-edge technology to complete their virtual labs and learn about the human body using the Visible Body-Courseware platform.

Who teaches this course?

Brandon Sawyer, Ph.D.

Dr. Brandon Sawyer

This course is taught by Dr. Brandon Sawyer who is a professor of Kinesiology and Biology, Kinesiology Department chair, and the Associate Dean of Operations for the College of Health Sciences at PLNU. Dr. Sawyer also teaches Anatomy and Physiology and Exercise Physiology at the undergrad level and Physiology for PLNU's PA program. Dr. Sawyer's experience includes working as a certified athletic trainer at the high school, college and professional levels; conducting research and publishing in areas related to the effects of exercise on health, maximal exercise performance and combating anti-fat attitudes.

Important Dates

  • When can I register for the course?
    • Registration is open now through October 26, 2026.
  • When will I get access to the course?
    • Course access begins on August 31, 2026.
    • Canvas access begins 2-3 days after your registration
  • When is the course deadline?
    • All coursework must be completed by December 20, 2026.
  • When will I receive my grades?
    • Grades appear on your transcript at the end of the semester, or when your instructor submits the grade. If you need your transcript before December 20, please communicate this with your course instructor.

Self-Pacing & Registration

  • Is the course self-paced?
    • Yes! The course is fully self-paced, with no fixed assignment deadlines. You can move through the material on your own schedule.
  • Can I register after the course has started?
    • Yes. Registration remains open after August 31, however, the later you register, the less time you will
      have to complete the course before the final deadline.
  • Why does registration close on October 26?
    • We want every student to have enough time to succeed. Registration closes to ensure all students have at
      least 7 weeks to complete the course.
  • What are the benefits of registering early?
    • Registering before the course opens gives you the maximum amount of time to complete your
      coursework and the most flexibility in pacing your learning.
    • Early registration allows for a potential refund if your plans change before the course begins.

Refund Policy

  • What is the refund policy?
    • Refunds are available only before August 31, 2026 (before course access begins).
    • Once the course opens, no refunds will be issued, regardless of when you registered.
