Join fellow undergraduate researchers and their faculty mentors for a one-day celebration of scientific discovery, collaboration, and innovation on April 17, 2027, at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California.

The West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference (WCBSURC) provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to present their original research across a broad range of biological sciences, including biology, biochemistry, and biophysics. Students may share their work through either an oral presentation or poster presentation and connect with fellow researchers, faculty mentors, and students from institutions across the region and beyond.

The 2027 conference in San Diego marks the 50th anniversary of WCBSURC, which was founded by Santa Clara University in 1976. Over the past half century, the conference has been hosted by 12 institutions in addition to Santa Clara University and has welcomed more than 15,000 students and faculty mentors representing 234 institutions across 45 states and Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

What benefits are covered by the conference registration fee?

The Conference registration fee covers all food and beverage services provided throughout the day, including the Continental Breakfast, mid-morning water/tea/coffee, the Buffet Luncheon, mid-afternoon water/tea/coffee and the refreshments served during the Jazz Concert/Awards Reception. In addition, all registered participants will receive a commemorative ID badge and a hard copy of the Conference program. 

How and when can I register for the Conference?

You will be able to register online through the conference website, beginning on January 2, 2027.

Once my abstract has been submitted, how long will I have to wait before hearing if it has been accepted or declined?

You should expect to receive notification regarding the decision on your abstract within two working days after it has been submitted.

Is there a fee to submit an abstract?

An abstract may be submitted without paying a fee, but will not be incorporated into the official Conference program until the official registration process has been completed.

What are the poster dimensions?

Posters must be able to fit on a poster board that is 3 feet high by 4 feet wide. Tacks will be provided.

What happens if I have paid my registration but am unable to attend?

Registration fees will be refundable if a request is received at least two weeks prior to Conference Day (i.e. by no later than April 3, 2027).

What is the dress code for the conference?

Business casual is recommended.

Are there any discounts, scholarships or travel grants available for students?

A limited number of $400 travel grants will be provided by the host institution to students attending from institutions that have not previously been represented at a WCBSUR Conference (see the “History of the WCBSURC” link to determine if your institution qualifies). Otherwise, it is recommended that you ask your research mentor for help finding travel grants that are available either through your department, your institution or online, from various professional societies and organizations that support undergraduate research.

Abundant parking options are available on campus, all of which are free of charge. Details will be provided closer to Conference Day.
