Graduate Studies in Nursing - MSN
 Now is a great time to pursue an advanced nursing practice. The current nursing shortage and the move to achieve magnet status within the hospital systems has created a demand for both academically and clinically trained advanced practice nurses. Point Loma Nazarene University's graduate nursing program will put you in an optimal position to advance your career and to be an influence for positive patient outcomes. Admissions Requirements for Graduate Nursing Program: Step 1:
Please complete and submit all general graduate application materials. These materials can be found on the Application Process page, where you will also find the address to which you should send these materials.
Note Regarding Transcripts: Nursing applicant's transcripts must indicate a 3.0 GPA. (Students who do not meet this standard- see "Exceptions Policy" below).
RN Entry - Official transcript(s) must show completion of an ADN degree or equivalent from a National League for Nursing (NLN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or regionally accredited program (i.e. WASC). BSN Entry - Official transcript(s) must show completion of a BSN degree from an NLN, CCNE, or regionally accredited program with the following baccalaureate courses:
- Health Assessment
- Nursing Research
- Nursing Leadership
- Pathophysiology
- Statistics
- Community Health Nursing
Post MSN Entry - Official transcript(s) must show completion of an MSN degree from an NLN, CCNE, or regionally accredited program.
Please Note: Entry into the MSN program requires at least one year of continuous full-time nursing experience in a United States healthcare facility.
Foreign Transcripts: All foreign transcripts must have a course by course evaluation by World Education Services (WES) that includes degree equivalency and GPA.
Step 2:
Application Checklist and Program Eligibility:
- Complete the School of Nursing Application and send to the address found on the Application Process page. Please Note: Nursing applicants must submit both the Graduate Application and the School of Nursing Application.
- Please provide two confidential letters of recommendation. Please provide your references with the Graduate Nursing Letter of Recommendation Form and have them send the completed recommendation directly to the address found on the Application Process page.
- Complete a personal essay of 250 words that demonstrates graduate-level writing skills and describes the importance of graduate studies at this time in your career. Send your completed essay to the address found on the Application Process page.
- Upon receipt of all of your required documents, an interview will be scheduled with the graduate nursing selection committee.
- Although you will not be tested on your technical competency, you are expected to have basic computer literacy including word processing, Internet browsing, email, presentations, and the ability to search relevant Internet databases.
Exceptions Policy:
Applicants who do not meet the above standards but can demonstrate that they have an exceptionally rich experiential background and/or have demonstrated dramatic change in academic performance, may petition the department to review their status. The School of Nursing will follow the exceptions policy as published in the current catalog.
Other Provisions Upon Acceptance:
To satisfy the requirements of our clinical facilities, upon acceptance into the nursing program you will need to provide proof of the following items:
- Current California licensure as a registered nurse
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR certificate from the American Heart Association
- Background check and drug testing (failure to pass the background check and/or drug testing may result in an inability to complete the program)
- Completed School of Nursing Form Packet, which includes documentation of the following items:
- Proof of required immunizations (We will only accept copies of your official immunization record or paper documentation of titers)
- Current TB screening
- Current HIPAA certificate
- Student health history
- Physical exam form
