A Transformational Future Shaped by Christian Wholeness
In today’s polarized and anxious world, where division is often mistaken for clarity and outrage passes for conviction, both the Church and our broader culture are yearning for something deeper—a clearer light by which to see and live faithfully.
That deeper need? Communities that can hold together what Scripture never meant to separate—truth, grace, and love under the Lordship of Christ. Communities that can resist ideological entrapment. Communities that embody a Spirit-led, Scripture-shaped wisdom.
Right now, Christian universities are in a unique position to provide this kind of witness, not only in what we say, but in how we form students, faculty, and leaders. But our success will require more than academic excellence or a rich theological heritage. It calls for a renewed vision of wholeness—one that shapes not only who we are as a community, but how we teach, learn, and contribute to the life of the mind.
At PLNU, that vision springs from our Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, which calls us to hold together what Scripture refuses to separate. But this isn’t about soft compromise or quiet avoidance. It’s about resisting the pressure to fragment what God has joined together, and learning to live in the faithful tension where truth and love, Spirit and reason, and grace and obedience meet. These tensions are not competing values to be weighed against one another, but inseparable commitments that require wisdom, formation, and Spirit-empowered obedience to live faithfully.
We call this The Way of Faithful Tension—not a posture of balance or moderation, but a commitment to Spirit-led, Scripture-shaped discernment in real and often asymmetrical situations. It is a way of living and thinking anchored in Scripture, shaped by discernment, and grounded in both conviction and compassion. This is not simply our heritage. It is the future we are called to live out and offer as a gift to our students, the church, and the world.
This vision is deeply rooted in our Wesleyan-Holiness heritage, while drawing on the shared wisdom of the wider Christian tradition, which calls us to pursue both truth and holiness through lives transformed by God’s grace. In this tradition, Christian discernment is never merely intellectual; it is spiritual formation shaped by Scripture, guided by the Holy Spirit, and lived out within the community of the Church.
The 5 Elements of The Way of Faithful Tension at PLNU
1. Scripture is Our Foundation for Discernment
Like John Wesley, we begin with the authority of Scripture—God’s uniquely inspired witness that reveals Jesus Christ as Lord. Interpreted in community and illuminated by the Holy Spirit, Scripture forms the foundation of our Spirit-led, Scripture-shaped discernment. Reason, the historic witness of the Church, and the transforming experience of God’s grace all contribute to this work of discernment, yet always in conversation with and under the authority of the written Word, which by the Spirit bears faithful witness to the living Word—Jesus Christ.
2. We Shape Students with Courage, Compassion, and Christ-like Character
We form students to engage the world with both clarity and humility—able to speak the truth in love, to listen deeply, and to navigate complexity with faithfulness. But more than that, we are committed to their spiritual formation: shaping lives rooted in Christ, guided by Scripture, and responsive to the Holy Spirit's leading.
3. We Equip Faculty for Theological and Intellectual Integration
Our faculty are invited into an uncommon model of discernment that merges deep theological reflection—anchored in Scripture—with academic excellence and pedagogical rigor. This vision is expressed in scholarship that is both intellectually rigorous and faithfully shaped by the truth of the Gospel, reflecting a way of knowing and teaching that is meaningfully different from the assumptions and aims of the broader secular academy.
4. We Foster a Community of Belonging
Through our commitment to Cultivating Shalom—wholeness, flourishing, and right relationships—we are building a campus culture that reflects the unity of the body of Christ while welcoming honest questions and diverse perspectives. Belonging is not merely social; it is deeply spiritual, grounded in the truth that every person is made in the image of God, and that together, we submit ourselves to the Lordship of Christ as part of this vital Christian community.

Our university leadership is committed to giving life to the Way of Faithful Tension as a defining call for this generation of Christian higher education, not merely as a strategy but as a spiritual gift that offers hope, direction, and inspiration.
Our Calling
The Way of Faithful Tension is not simply an idea. It is a formational vision that shapes how we read Scripture, educate students, equip faculty, and cultivate community at PLNU.
In a fractured cultural moment, PLNU is not only positioned to educate but also called to lead—helping our students learn to walk in the light of Christ with wisdom, courage, and love. We do so by holding together what the world increasingly pulls apart: truth and love, Spirit and reason, grace and obedience, conviction and compassion.
In that holy tension, our graduates are prepared to carry wisdom, courage, and the light of Christ into every sphere of society. This is the calling we embrace at PLNU—the Way of Faithful Tension.
