Melissa Newman, Ph.D. serves as Associate Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Public Engagement (SHAPE) and a Professor of Communication at Point Loma Nazarene University, where she provides academic leadership, supports faculty development, and advances initiatives that strengthen student learning and vocational formation. She recently completed her service as Vice Chair of the Faculty Council and continues to play an active role in university governance.
Her teaching and scholarship focus on the intersection of Christian worldview, vocation, leadership, and digital media. As a 2003 fellow of the Summer Institute for Christian Scholarship, Dr. Newman has spent more than two decades studying the influence of social networking and digital communication on emerging adults. Her research examines the cultural pressures created by digital perfection, identity formation, and social media comparison while developing practical educational approaches that help students navigate today's digital landscape with wisdom, resilience, and purpose.
Central to her work is the conviction that every profession can be an avenue for faithful service. Through her teaching, research, and mentoring, Dr. Newman challenges the misconception that serving God is limited to traditional ministry, helping students discover meaningful connections between their faith and their chosen vocation. This work was featured at the 2026 NetVUE National Conference in her presentation, Creating a Pathway to Participation: Engaging Faculty and Staff Across Campus in Vocation.
As one of the university's leaders for the NetVUE initiative and a recipient of the NetVUE grant from the Lily Foundation, Dr. Newman has helped develop campus-wide programming that integrates vocational exploration throughout the student experience. She has also mentored numerous new faculty members and graduating seniors, drawing on her industry experience to cultivate career readiness and facilitate internship opportunities with organizations including the San Diego Wave FC, the San Diego Padres and hundreds of businesses across Southern California.
Dr. Newman is recognized for combining innovation with a commitment to student success. She has modernized academic assessment processes through streamlined systems that improve efficiency and data-informed decision making, while also leading efforts to professionalize and enhance Point TV and Radio Studios as experiential learning environments for communication and media students.
Her commitment to teaching excellence has been recognized with the Point Loma Nazarene University Excellence in Teaching Award in 2020 and 2021. Whether serving in the classroom, mentoring faculty, or shaping institutional initiatives, Dr. Newman is dedicated to cultivating a learning community where grace is foundational, truth is pursued, and students are equipped to lead lives of purpose, service, and faithful vocation.
Dr. Newman is a member of the President's Advisory Group, providing strategic counsel on institutional initiatives, shared governance, and policy transparency. During the university's 2025 presidential transition, she served on the Special Events Advisory Committee for the Presidential Inauguration. She also contributes to PLNU’s mission through service on the Mission Formation Initiative Team and the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) Resource Team.
Before entering higher education, Dr. Newman built a successful career in national marketing, communication and event management. These experiences continue to inform her teaching and mentorship. She is passionate about preparing students to become thoughtful communicators and ethical leaders who integrate professional excellence with Christian character.
