Mark Nissen, Ph.D.

Adjunct Professor of Computer Information Technology

Dr. Nissen began his collegiate education with a BS in Business from UC Berkeley, with a penchant for information technology (IT). He then applied his Berkeley education and IT talent to analytic, management and executive positions in the aerospace and electronics industry, during which time he earned an MS in Systems Management—with emphases on Systems Analysis and R&D Management—at the University of Southern California (USC). He then quit his excellent job and earned a Ph.D. in Information Systems at USC, with heavy emphasis on artificial intelligence and machine learning (AIML).

Returning to teach and conduct research at Berkeley, Dr. Nissen developed and taught the university’s first course on computer networking and electronic commerce. He was also involved heavily in multiple CommerceNet projects (e.g., Intelligent Hub), applying knowledge and expertise with intelligent agents to industry in Silicon Valley and beyond. Having started a family with young children, Professor Nissen then decided on a move to the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, where he advanced quickly to become Professor of Information Science, and where he wrote four books and over 200 scientific articles, many published in prestigious academic journals in addition to professional magazines.

Continuing to work for the NPS, Mark joined the Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) adjunct faculty in 2017, where he teaches the Computer Networking course regularly through the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Program. As circumstances continue to progress, Dr. Nissen looks forward teaching additional CIT courses for PLNU.
