Where are you from?
I grew up in the small town of The Dalles, Oregon, but my family lives in Bend, Oregon now. I grew up skiing in the Cascades, cycling along the Columbia River, and hiking in some of the most beautiful places in the world.
As a San Diego local, what's something that your out-of-state students may
not know about San Diego?
San Diego has something for everyone, you just have to know where to look. One of my favorite parts about living in SD has been searching for places that the average tourist won't find. San Diego is full of hole-in-the-wall food places, quiet coffee shops, and other places to explore off the beaten path. Have fun exploring one of the most unique cities in the world.
What advice would you give someone who is trying to pick a major?
Find an area of study that aligns with your passions and gifts. College is a transforming time in so many more ways than just knowledge in an area of study. You will learn information no matter what major you pick, but if you find something that you are passionate about, your passions and gifts will grow alongside your knowledge. I started in a major because I thought it would be a good career path but quickly learned that if you aren't truly passionate about what you are studying you will lose interest quickly. Lean into what you are most passionate about and what will challenge the ways you are gifted when choosing a major.
Where is the best place to ride your bike in San Diego?
My favorite place to ride is north from Point Loma along the coast. You can climb up Mt. Soledad, which has the best view of the city and then keep moving north along the coast over Torrey Pines to Del Mar. If I'm really feeling good, I will ride all the way to from Point Loma to Encinitas and back. There are not many places where you can ride your bike right beside the ocean for so long.
