STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE AT PLNU
PLNU is committed to maintaining an environment where students are safe and healthy. For the safety of the community and the well-being of our students, it is vital that individuals living on campus have access to quality health care in the event of illness or accident.
Considering this commitment to a healthy community, undergraduate students that are registered for classes on the main campus must have valid comprehensive health insurance coverage. For each year of enrollment, students must have proof of active health insurance on the student portal, even if they are studying abroad and regardless of the number of units enrolled. The University requires that students submit proof of health insurance through their patient portal prior to Welcome Week check- in.
Start by visiting your Patient portal: pl.nu/well
- Sign in with your OneLogin username and password (Search and click the 'Point N Click Patient Portal' app if not automatically redirected)
- Navigate to the 'University Requirements' tab on the Home Page or on the menu
- Upload your proof of insurance in .pdf format to the 'Insurance Card' line: The front and back of your card or a digital insurance document (Military- email sdwellnesscenter@pointloma.edu)
Health Insurance
- Proof of health insurance is required primarily to ensure students have access to necessary medical and mental healthcare, reducing financial risk from emergencies. PLNU mandates coverage for enrollment to ensure students can afford routine care, prescription drugs, and in-network services near campus, providing a safety net for their well-being and academic success.
- Students must have comprehensive coverage that comply with Affordable Care Act (ACA) standards, covering essentials like mental health services, prescriptions, and preventative care.
- Students must have access to local care: This ensures students have coverage for services beyond the limited scope of campus health clinics, particularly for students attending school out-of-state.
- We want to ensure protection against high costs for students and families from out-of-pocket medical expenses.
- We may need to refer students to specialists and need to have access to care within a reasonable distance of the university.
- Without this coverage, students risk incurring high medical bills that can jeopardize their education and financial security.
We need a copy of your health insurance card uploaded prior to arrival on campus. A PDF version is preferred, a clear photo of the front and back of the card is also acceptable. The insurance must have care options in the Southern California region with access to medical and mental healthcare.

International Student Health Insurance
To assist with health insurance coverage that satisfies the requirements of the Affordable Care Act for all international students, the University provides a competitive, affordable international student health insurance plan through AHP (insurance broker). International students (undergraduate, graduates and student-athletes) are automatically enrolled into the program for each semester of study at PLNU.
Please visit the PLNU Health Insurance website for more information on the medical care that is available through this plan. Mandatory Student Accident (MSA) Plan
PLNU has partnered with Relation Insurance Services to provide valuable accident coverage for all undergraduate students registered for classes on the main campus and graduate student-athletes. MSA insurance is supplemental coverage for medical expenses incurred for accidental injury. The MSA does not provide coverage for general health, preventative services or sickness related costs.
The mandatory annual cost of the plan is less than $40 per student per year; costs are included in the tuition billing statement. The plan provides coverage whether or not college is in session, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The effective date of coverage for enrolled students is August 1, 2024 to August 1, 2025.
To download a plan brochure, benefit snapshot, claims form and more, visit here. For questions about MSA enrollment or submitting claims forms, contact Relation Insurance Services at (800) 445-3126 (Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time).

Plan Ahead for Health Care for Academic Success and Well-being
Any time individuals move to new communities, it is important to establish relationships with new medical, dental, and vision providers. We highly recommended that students and their families thoroughly review their health insurance coverage and discuss access to local health care providers while in the San Diego area. Planning ahead for possible future needs lowers student stress and eases family concerns should emergency or preventative care be needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my student aid continue to be available to cover both health insurance and tuition?
When calculating your costs to attend PLNU, be sure to include the cost of health insurance along with your other charges. While PLNU no longer has an insurance company partner who can offer health insurance, the same financial aid resources will be available to cover the costs of attending the university.
Your Student Account Advisor will be happy to assist you in reviewing any charges and the amount of financial aid for which you are eligible. Under the previous policy, PLNU would have automatically paid your premiums with those funds from your student account. The difference under the new policy is that you will request a refund and, in turn, pay your own insurance charges. Again, the same amount of financial aid resources will be available, this has not changed.
How do I buy health insurance?
With the changes occurring in health care across the country today, what was true a year ago, may not be true today. As a result, it is important to have a discussion with a current insurance agent who is aware of the various healthcare policies available.
If you are struggling with the question of whether or not you can afford a policy, you may talk with Debbie Hickman, who can direct you to a range of organizations that provide healthcare assistance. Debbie can be reached at (619) 849-2574 or sdwellnesscenter@pointloma.edu.
What are the most cost effective plans for health insurance?
That will depend on your income and your health care needs. Before you settle on a plan, you should first get a quote, find a price, and discover any out-of-pocket expenses your plan will expect you to pay (such as deductibles, co-insurance, and copay charges). Once you have all of this information together, it will be easier to find coverage which fits your needs.
