Dr. René H. Bravo (’79) has devoted his life to advancing the health and well-being of children, guided by faith, perseverance, and a deep sense of calling. A graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University, Rick’s journey into medicine was shaped by personal illness during his teenage years, an experience that strengthened his resolve to pursue a career in pediatric care and advocacy.
After earning his degree in Biology from PLNU, Rick attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his pediatric internship and residency at Stanford University. He went on to establish Bravo Pediatrics Medical Group in San Luis Obispo, where he has provided compassionate primary care to families on the Central Coast for nearly four decades.
Throughout his career, Rick has been a tireless advocate for children and underserved communities. He played key roles in advancing access to health care through initiatives such as the Children’s Health Initiative, First Five Commission, and CenCal Health, helping expand coverage and resources for families in need. His commitment to public service and thoughtful leadership led to his election as President of the California Medical Association, where as of October 2025 he serves as the voice for physicians across the state and helps shape health policy at the highest levels.
Rick’s service extends beyond medicine into the life of the church and university. A longtime member of the San Luis Obispo Church of the Nazarene, he has served on church and district boards and participated in Work and Witness teams in Guatemala, Romania, and Cuba. He has also remained deeply connected to Point Loma, serving on the Alumni Board and Board of Trustees, and currently as Chair of the Research Associates Board, where he has championed undergraduate research programs.
Colleagues and former students describe Rick as a steady, thoughtful leader who never loses sight of the human stories behind his work. Whether mentoring young scholars, advocating for children, or caring for patients and families, he reflects a lifelong commitment to service grounded in Christian compassion.
Rick and his wife, Debra, reside in San Luis Obispo. They are grateful for a growing family that includes five sons and daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren.
