Call 911 during an immediate emergency.
Then notify Public Safety so officers can help direct emergency responders to your location.
Know your location.
When reporting an emergency, provide the building name, room number, nearby landmark, and details about what is happening.
Report suspicious activity promptly.
Do not assume someone else has already called. Contact Public Safety whenever something seems unsafe or out of place.
Lock your room, office, and vehicle.
Even when stepping away briefly, secure the door and take your keys with you.
Keep valuables out of sight.
Do not leave phones, laptops, backpacks, wallets, or other belongings unattended or visible inside a parked vehicle.
Secure your bicycle properly.
Use a high-quality U-lock and record your bicycle’s serial number. Registering it with a reputable bicycle database may also improve the chances of recovery if it is stolen.
Travel with others after dark.
Stay in well-traveled areas, remain aware of your surroundings, and request a courtesy escort from Public Safety whenever you feel uncomfortable.
Limit distractions while walking.
Keep headphone volume low, avoid looking continuously at your phone, and pay attention to vehicles, bicycles, stairs, and other people around you.
Be familiar with evacuation routes.
Note exits and designated gathering areas in your residence hall, classroom, workplace, or event venue.
Take every alarm and emergency message seriously.
Follow instructions from Public Safety, university personnel, and emergency responders.
Do not touch suspicious packages or objects.
Leave the area, encourage others to move away, and report the item’s exact location to Public Safety.
Check in when visiting campus.
Visitors to the Point Loma campus should stop at the Welcome Center at the Lomaland Drive entrance to receive a one-day parking permit and follow posted parking and event instructions.
